The Crawford Group
Renewable Energy Catalysis Research at Montana State University. Transforming carbon dioxide from a pollutant into a valuable resource.
Catalyzing a cleaner future
The Crawford Group at Montana State University is focused on forging a path towards a sustainable future. We are a collaborative team of graduate and undergraduate researchers, led by Dr. James Crawford, dedicated to unlocking the potential for renewable energy integration and catalysis – transforming carbon dioxide from a pollutant into a valuable resource.

Our Research
Trapped in our atmosphere are 3.2 trillion tons of CO2, adding 36 billion tons each year. By harnessing CO2 as a resource, we can replace dwindling fossil fuels and curb climate change. But extracting valuable products from atmospheric CO2 requires ingenuity. We’re pioneering ways to capture, purify, and convert this gas into renewable products and streamlining the process to maximize efficiency and impact.
Atmospheric gases are the feedstocks of the future.
Earth-abundant elements are the catalysts.
Enzymes leverage low energy reaction pathways and have done so for over 4 billion years.
We imagine that heterogeneous catalysts can provide the same function.
